Volunteer With Kyaro

Our summer volunteer program brings college students from around the world to live and work in Tanzania. Our volunteers are passionate about using their skills to accomplish social good. They work closely with the Kyaro team and our users, gaining hands-on experience and helping to improve our products, build our organization’s capacity, and develop our services.

Make an Impact

Our volunteers are much more than interns or assistants. Past volunteers have already completed pivotal projects that made Kyaro what it is today. They have launched our current website, redesigned major products, launched new ones, and developed our fundraising strategy.

Life in Tanzania

Volunteers also experience life in Tanzania in a deep and meaningful way, learning about local culture, cuisine, and wildlife. They see many places in and aspects of Tanzania that are outside the experience of any tourist. Housing, transportation, and food costs are covered by Kyaro. Do your grocery shopping at the local market, take the local buses, and explore the city!

Living and working in Tanzania is a challenging experience for many people. We look for volunteers who:

  • Are adaptable, open-minded, and adventurous

  • Are excited to meet people from many walks of life

  • Are outstanding collaborators

  • Are excited to do work that they can be proud of

Future Projects

While volunteer projects change each year, potential future projects include:

  • Redesigning the manufacturing process for products: as we scale our business, we need to adjust the way in which we manufacture our devices.

  • Designing new products: there are other devices in our pipeline that we do not yet have the capacity to do the mechanical design for. We’re seeking engineers to help us design products including a postal support chair, a motorized moving bench, and new attachments for our current wheelchair.

  • Working on advertising campaigns within Tanzania: currently, we rely on partnerships with related NGOs and word of mouth to reach most of our customers. In the coming year, we will be putting more resources into learning how to effectively reach Tanzanians with disabilities and advertise our devices to them.

  • Developing our fundraising pipeline: grants and donations allow us to grow and expand, reaching new customers.
